New Air Passenger Protection Regulations now in force

Passengers have new rights under the Canadian Transportation Agency’s (CTA) Air Passenger Protection Regulations when they travel by air.

As of July 15, 2019, airlines will now be required to meet new obligations concerning communication, denied boarding, tarmac delay, baggage and the transportation of musical instruments. According to the federal government, the airline’s tariff is the contract of carriage between you and your airline – it covers your rights and responsibilities as a passenger and your airline’s obligations to you.

With the introduction of the Air Passenger Protection Regulations, airlines can now be ordered to pay passengers as much as $2,400 in compensation for bumping them off overbooked flights and up to $2,100 for losing or damaging their baggage. These regulations apply to all flights to, from and within Canada, including connecting flights.

For more information, visit the Air Passenger Protection website to know your rights. Additional airline obligations will come into effect December 15, 2019.
