Why You Should Travel with Your Mother

Your mom might not be the first person that springs to mind when you think of your perfect travel companion, but we’re here to change your mind.

Planning an annual trip with your mom, whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or a longer trip abroad can be an amazing experience for both of you. Here’s why:

You will both be out of your comfort zones

Travelling together puts both of you in a new environment where neither one of you is in charge, unlike when you visit each other’s homes. It also means that you’ll have to compromise when it comes to deciding where to go and what to see. The benefit of this is that you will probably suggest activities that the other has never done before – which is less likely to happen when you travel with your peers. Ultimately, you should both get out of your comfort zone, which is not only a rewarding part of travelling but also a great way to strengthen your relationship.

You’ll learn more about each other

Speaking of relationships, travelling together is a great way to get to know each other better. Rather than seeing each other as parent and child you can learn more about each other’s true personalities. As a bonus, sharing new experiences and trying new activities and food will likely bring up topics that you haven’t discussed before, and when you’re on vacation you’ve got plenty of time for uninterrupted quality chats.

You can cross off your bucket lists together

The trips you take together can be as big or as small as you like, whether it’s a milestone birthday trip to explore Europe together or a weekend away in a town halfway between your homes, it will be special either way. Knowing that you have a plan to go away together once a year means that you can both come up with destinations that are on your bucket lists (and maybe even add a few new ones).

You (probably) travel well together

We know that not all relationships are the same and that not everyone will travel well with their mom but many of us do share similar travel habits with our parents (because in most cases they are the ones who showed us how to travel in the first place!) And if you do have disagreements about your itinerary or what time to wake up, you know that you can be honest enough with each other to find a comfortable balance for both of you.

It’s a great way to catch up

Work and family obligations keep you pretty busy day-to-day so it’s nice to spend some quality uninterrupted time together when you can relax and catch up on each other’s lives.

You’ll create lifelong memories

We hate to say it, but travelling with your mom will not always be an option. Even if you take just one trip together, you’ll create memories that you will cherish forever, not to mention the pictures and stories that will come from a trip. This Mother’s Day why not start planning a trip with your mom? It may just be the best gift for both of you.
